#NFLDraft: My top 5 running backs in the 2013 draft

The 2013 draft class is full of really talented backs it was hard to choose just five to do a write up on so I took my time & narrowed my list down to Giovani Bernard, Kenjon Barner, Jonathan Franklin & Mike Gilislee respectively. It was a little harder trying to predict where these guys would land because teams tend to value backs different now a day’s & you've seen many teams go to a two-headed rushing attack & if you’re going to do that why spend a first on a running back? Last year two backs went in the first Trent Richardson & David Wilson respectively. This year I only see one back going in the first MAYBE two.....so here are my guys for this year...
1. Jonathan Franklin, UCLA In my opinion Franklin is the best back in this class, while he doesn’t look like a hard nose back he really is, Franklin is great for the new spread offenses in the league today because he runs the ball really well out of the shotgun as well as in traditional sets. Franklin is 5th in the nation with 1700 yards on 268 carries which is an average of 6.3 yards a touch...HELLO!! Franklin gives you what everyone wants & needs in a franchise back he runs tough in-between the tackles, has the speed to bounce it outside, moves to make the first guy miss & can put his head down to finish off runs. Franklin is also an amazing pass blocker & that helps you stay on the field in the NFL. If you weren’t sold on Franklin before the Pac-12 championship game vs. Stanford than I'm sure his 19 carry 194 yds & 2 td performance won you over. I think Franklin is the best back in this draft but I don’t think he'll go in the first but if I'm the New York Jets or Dallas Cowboys I'm jumping on Franklin in the second. For Dallas it gives them a number 2 to go with Murray and we all know Murray has trouble staying on the field for a full 16 game schedule so I say Dallas Cowboys second round. Player comparison:
He reminds me so much of Warrick Dunn, a small compact guy who can still earn the tough yards & is a nightmare for linebackes in the passing game.
2. Giovani Bernard, North Carolina Bernard is one of the most interesting cases this year because he didn’t carry the ball as much as all of the other "elite" backs coming out this year with just 184 carries but he haul in 47 passes for nearly 500 yards & 5 tds so he's a serious threat in the passing game to say the least. He did have 1228 with those 184 carries giving him an average of 6.7 yards per carry which is off the charts! Bernard may be the only back to go in the first round this year and if I had to put money on it I'd say Green Bay will be his landing spot. Rogers NEEDS a running game & Bernard runs the ball really well from the spread shotgun look which is huge because the Packers run most of their plays from the gun. I think what you get with Bernard is a strong powerful guy with quick feet, exceptional speed & really good hands. If I'm the packers I have to take this guy & hand him the starting job day one he's that good. Player comparison:
Maurice Jones-Drew, they both have the same style in running & are built the same with the strong lower body, I think Bernard can be a work horse just like Mojo.
3. Kenjon Barner, Oregon Kenjon Barner is my favorite back in this draft & one of my favorite players in this draft period. Barner is a track star with ELITE speed, great quickness & excellent patience; he also runs the ball between the tackles pretty well for a smaller back which is something you don’t expect to see. A lot of people are worried that he's a system guy I say forget about that, watch the tape this kid is special, 248 carries on the year for 1624 & 21 tds while adding 19 catches for 200+ yds and a touchdown. The kid can do it all, I worry about him in pass protecting situations though that’s something he'll have to improve on at the next level. Barner really stood out against USC where he carried the ball 38 times for 321 yards & FIVE TOUCHDOWNS! I don’t see Barner going in the first round but if I'm the Lions & it’s the second or third I'm running to the podium with "Kenjon Barner" in big bold print, he runs the ball exceptionally well out of the shotgun which is huge for Detroit because they live in the gun, he's a awesome receiver out of the backfield & it gives the Lions what they thought they would get out of Javid Best. Player comparison:
Jamaal Charles, when I look at Barner I see Charles 2.0
Mike Gillislee, Florida Besides having an awesome football last name Gillislee is one of the premier backs coming out of the SEC this year. A senior at Florida, Gillislee rushed for 1104 on 235 carries & added 10 touchdowns. Gillislee is a true work horse I firmly believe that if the Florida passing game wasn’t so awful this year he would have had a bigger campaign, they leaned on him this year a lot & he ran against a lot of 8 & 9 man fronts. I watched him carry the ball 22 times against a rough Georgia defense & really hold his team together in that game & against LSU he was their offense carrying the ball 34 times for 146 & 2 tds. I think with Gillislee you get a nice size back with some quickness & power, he doesn’t have elite speed but is a fast guy & can make guys miss in the second level. It was hard trying to figure out where he'd be drafted I went with 3rd round to the Colts. The Colts have Vick Ballard there who is a really good receiver out of the backfield & a good scat guy but they need someone who can grind out the tough yards & I think Gillislee can be that guy. Player comparison:
Arian Foster, I'm not saying he's going to be as good as Foster but when you watch Gillislee play you can see the one cut style like Foster & he seems to glide through holes just like Arian.
Theo Riddick, Notre Dame Theo Riddick is another one of my favorite players in this draft this guy can be a dynamite sot receiver or a dynamite back for you at the next level he's so versatile, he moved to wide out his junior year to help the team out than moved back in the backfield for his senior year where he's rushed for 880 yds on 180 carries & he hauled in 35 catches for 364 the guy is perfect on 3rd down he can pass block with the best of them, runs the ball hard between the tackles & has all the speed in the world to out run defenders when he gets to the second level not to mention his moves in the open field are superb. Riddick is a rare guy you can give him 15 carries & 5 catches a game & move him everywhere on the field to take advantage of mismatches. I don’t see how teams aren’t higher on Theo he is a stud, I see him going late 3rd early 4th & to be honest that’s a steal for what Theo can do for a team. Let me give you some numbers here the 3 biggest games this year for his team Riddick stepped up, Pitt, the overtime game he carried the ball 22 times for 85 yards while bringing in 4 catches for 35 yards and the game tying touchdown, Boston College he carried the ball 18 times for 104 & hauled in 5 catches for 56 yards, against USC he ran the ball 20 times for 146 & a touchdown while adding 4 catches to that total. Riddick can be an every down back in this league without any question I see him going somewhere like Houston, with Ben Tate probably on his way out they need a number 2 & Kubiak will know how to use Riddick in the passing game to take advantage of everything he does well. I also see the Patriots as a team that would love Theo they like to flex their backs out as slot guys and he's perfect for that. Player comparison:
Marshall Faulk, I've watched alot of tape on Riddick he is Faulk 2.0 with the way he catches the ball out of the backfield, his quick feet & great open field moves & to have the ability to run the ball up the middle with toughness is a trait that reminds me so much of Marshall Faulk.

#NFLDRAFT: My Top 5 QBs in the 2013 draft

The 2013 NFL draft is really deep when it comes to the offensive line, running backs, tight ends & defensive line; however, the quarterback position in my opinion doesn’t seem to be as deep. Last year of course we had 5 quarterbacks get drafted that now have starting jobs, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Russell Wilson & Nick Foles respectively. I don’t see that kind of dept this year with this class but I do see some talent so without further a due my top 5 qbs coming out, who they compare to & where they fit best. (Keep in mind these are all seniors as underclassmen haven’t declared for the draft yet.)
1. Geno Smith, West Virginia If you ask me Geno Smith maybe the most NFL ready quarterback in this draft, with that being said I believe he clearly goes #1 either to the Chiefs or the Jaguars but is he the right fit??? In Jacksonville they have a stud tight end in Mercedes Lewis a 6'6 speedy athletic guy who can really take over the middle of the field, they have a couple of wide receivers developing with Justin Blackmon their 2012 1st overall selection & Cecil Shorts has come along this year as a slot guy. In addition to those guys you got to think you’re going to get Maurice Jones-Drew back next year which will help this offense out a ton! I think Geno is a great fit here he's got a strong arm, he's very accurate but I question his decision making at times it seems like after his first read he gets confused out there so he may need to be coached up but if you’re the Jags you have to take this guy, he's completed 71.4% of his passes this year which is 2nd in the nation, he's 4th in the nation with 4,004 yards & leads the nation in touchdowns with 40 & has only 6 ints....nuff said. Player comparison:
He reminds me of Josh Freeman, big guy with a strong accurate arm coming from the Big-12.
2. Matt Barkley, USC Barkley is interesting but let’s say the Jags have the #1 pick & go with Geno Smith, that leaves the Bills, Chiefs & Cardinals looking for a qb I see Barkley landing somewhere there if I had to take a wild guess I'd say the Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald has to be fed up with the quarterback play & it’s time to bring in a franchise guy & many people believe Barkley can be that guy. What hurts Barkley are his predecessors Carson Palmer, Matt Lienart & Mark Sanchez. You’re going to have teams thinking this year "Do we want the next USC bust on our roster?" If I'm Cardinal fans I don’t worry about that though this kid has started at USC since in first day on campus & he's been the face of that program for 4 years. I think what you get with Barkley is experience, knowledge of the position & a competitive fire that every team loves in a young quarterback. Barkley didn’t "light it up" this year but he did complete 64% of his passes & threw for over 3,000 yards with 36 touchdowns, the 16 ints bother me, he tends to make the head scratching throw at times that makes you wonder how could anyone want to use a first rounder on him. I will say that he's a winner & a fighter with a big arm, GREAT foot work in the pocket & he has the smarts to not only manage a game but help players line up on the field & be a field general. I believe the Cardinals would be a good fit but they'd need to sure up the offensive line & get some kind of a running game going but you can’t win games if you can’t get Fitzgerald the ball so I say draft Barkley.
Player comparison: Andy Dalton, their footwork in the pocket stands out to me, & neither one has a HUGE arm but both have strong arms I think Barkley & Dalton are very close to eachother.
3. Tyler Wilson, Arkansas Tyler Wilson is a interesting case to say the least, many people think he should've entered the draft after last year but he decided to go back to school for one more year after throwing for 3600+ yards with 24 touchdowns to just 6 ints compared to this year where he's thrown for 3,300 yards with 21 touchdowns & 13 ints. Look clearly his stock has gone down from last year but the team around him this year was just awful so I don’t think you can just look at the numbers. I believe Wilson will be a starter in this league he's got great poise in the pocket, decent foot work, a good strong live arm & he's accurate which are all things you need in a quarterback at the next level. There’s some people out there questioning his mental toughness, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with his mental toughness he played on a bad team this year that was in a tough situation not to mention he got hurt early in the season & missed the Alabama game. If I'm the Chiefs and it’s the 2nd round and Tyler Wilson is there I am licking my chops thinking we got our guy! The Chiefs already have Jamaal Charles who is a great back but it’s time to put someone under center that has some kind of promise & I believe Wilson is a good fit. He won’t have alit of weapons to work with next year Bowe seems to want out so maybe it'll be good for the Chiefs to draft Wilson & develop him by handing the ball to Charles & playing defense. Tyler isn’t going to wow anyone at the combine with his athleticism but for the Chiefs I believe it gives them an upgrade at the position & a solid foundation moving forward.
Player comparison: Eli Manning, notice the picture is from Eli Mannings' rookie year, now I'm not saying Wilson will go on to win 2 superbowls but when you watch him he slides in the pocket alot like Eli their throwing motions are very close, they both have strong arms but not huge arms I think its a safe comparison.
4. Mike Glennon, NC State Mike Glennon is an interesting one, he's 6-6 230 & can make every throw in the book; he's very accurate, moves well in the pocket for a big guy but not what you would call athletic. I don’t see Glennon going higher than mid to late 2nd, I personally think he's a 3rd round choice not to take anything away from Glennon but I think he'll need to sit for a year or two I've watched him this year & I was impressed like I said he's got a big strong arm & he throws a real tight spiral, you rarely see him miss a open receiver he's very accurate. I wonder if he can be consistent at the next level, he had a horrible game to start the year off against Tennessee than really bounced back he really struggled in the Florida St game until that last drive where he led them down the field for the game winning score. I think he's going to be a talented quarterback at the next level but I wouldn’t throw him out there as a rookie, if I'm the Bills though I have to take a shot on this kid, there’s talk about Buffalo bringing in Mike Vick in the offseason if they do that I say draft Glennon so he can sit for a year or two.
Player comparison: Matt Ryan, when you watch Glennon play he looks like Matt Ryan jr, a tall traditional qb with a strong arm who is deadly accurate,I think you bring Glennon along the same way the Falcons did Ryan you run the football & limit his mistakes until hes mature enough to handle the offense.
5. Landry Jones, Oklahoma Landry Jones probably won’t get as much run as the other 4 guys I've named but he had an awesome college career he threw for over 4,000 yards twice & is only 11 yards away from 4,000 this year. A four year starter at OU, Jones has a lot of promise I don’t see him going in the 1st or 2nd but a late 3rd early 4th round pick for Landry Jones seems to be a good fit. If you’re the Cowboys how do you not spend a 4th round pick on this kid? Nobody is asking for the Cowboys to draft the next Aikman but you do need a guy there for when Romo's career is over & why not Jones? Big arm, good poise in the pocket & let’s remember before the season Jones didn’t have any work with the receivers he's been throwing to all year so it took them a couple of games to gel. I really think people are over looking Landry Jones because he's not Andrew Luck or RG3 but I think with some coaching Jones can be a franchise qb in this league.
Player comparison/i>: Jake Plummer, Jones & Plummer to me are so a like its scary! Just like Plummer I believe with coaching & the right system Landry Jones can be a solid qb in the NFL.

Why RG3 deserves Rookie of the Year

A lot of people have made the case for Andrew Luck to win the rookie of the year but I firmly believe the award clearly goes to Robert Griffin III. Not only is he the most exciting rookie out of this year’s class but he has the redskins at 6-6 & second in the NFC East which is one of the hardest divisions in football hands down. He's second in the league in passer rating only to Aaron Rogers & he's completed 67.1 percent of his passes which is number one for rookies this year. By comparison Peyton Manning only completed 56.7 percent of his passes his rookie year & it took Manning six years to reach a completion percentage of 67. I am not trying to hammer home that RG3 is better than Peyton but the numbers don’t lie he is having a better rookie campaign than Peyton had. Peyton also threw 28 INTS his rookie year; RG3 has 4 & Andrew Luck as 16. If that doesn’t convince you he's also fourth amongst rookies in rushing with 714 yds & 6 tds. If that doesn’t do it how about this, RG3 has the Redskins 3-1 in the NFC east, I don’t care who you are you’re lying through your teeth if you told me you saw this coming. I firmly believe this kid is having a special season & he deserves to be the rookie of the year & I'll go as far as saying he should be voted into the pro-bowl also.
