5 players the Texans should be looking at in the 2013 Draft
Tavon Austin
Position: WR
School : West Virginia
Perjected round: 1
The Texans don't have any big holes so I believe they can draft on b.p.a (best player available), with that being said what’s been missing in this offense is a number two wide out with big play speed. Well that’s what Tavon Austin brings to the table also with an added dimension in the return game. Kubiak is a smart play caller and I believe he'll be able to use Austin in the backfield, slot & in many different situations kind of like a Percy Harvin. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Texans went this route with their first selection they could use the speed on offense to go with the excellent defense they have.
Louis Nix
Position: NT
School: Notre Dame
Projected round 2-3
Wade Phillips defense has never called for a big nose tackle, he usually uses the more athletic nose like Earl Mitchell or Shaun Cody but everyone who runs the 3-4 looks for the guy who can plug up the middle it’s just they are so rare & usually when you find one he's either a good pass rusher or a good run stuffer, well with Nix you get BOTH. This kid can rush the passer and play the run I've watched him stay on the field on 3rd downs in pass rushing situations & I've watched him plug the middle on goal line stops. The easiest way to help out Cushing next year is to have a nose that can plug up the line thus making it easy for Cushing or anyone else who may blitz. I see Nix as a mid second late 3rd & a perfect fit for the Texans defense.
Alex Okafor
Position: OLB
School: Texas
Projected round: 2-4
With Connor Barwin's contract being up at the end of the year I doubt the Texans reup him with the emergence of Whitney Mercilus, with that being said Brooks Reed isn’t the answer on the other side so I see the Texans going after a pass rusher maybe 3rd or 4th round or as early as the 2nd and if they do this has to be the guy on their radar. He's an in-state guy & a hell of a pass rusher, he plays the run very well & I believe would fit this scheme really really well. He reminds me of another former Texas pass rusher Brian Orakpo. I believe Okafor would be nasty in this defense which is already filled with talent.
Stepfan Taylor
Position: RB
School: Stanford
Projected round: 4-5
Taylor is a tough back who can do it all, I know what you’re thinking "we have Foster" yes your right, but Kubiak loves his weapons and I don’t see the Texans keeping Ben Tate after this year so somebody has to be brought in to take touches from Foster and I believe Taylor is the guy. He's a 3 year starter and a work horse that can pass protect as well as catch the ball out of the back field. The zone scheme that the Texans run is perfect for Taylor who can be a dominate one cut back & is also excellent in making the first man miss, I honestly think Taylor will be one of the steals of this draft.
Kenny Vaccaro
Position: S
School: Texas
Projected round: 1-2
Depending on what the Texans do with Glover Quin in the off season they may need to reload at saftey & just like with Okafor you have a guy in your backyard who is a stud. I've seen Vaccaro & believe he is a all around defensive back, he has the coverage skills you look for in a saftey & the toughness to come up and help in the run. If Quin isnt resigned you could see the Texans going this route or Matt Elam from Florida, but either way if Quin doesnt return to Houston in 2013 they will have to draft a saftey & I say why not Vaccaro?
